SPRINT 01 - A Beautiful Chair
How would you design a chair from scratch? Explore the form, materials and character of a chair through sketches, digital concepts or AI-generated ideas. Create your design on one A3 page. Keep it simple, experiment with ideas and focus on the concept rather than creating a polished final presentation. The brief
Chairs are everywhere — but there are countless ways to rethink what a chair could be.
For this Design Sprint, your challenge is simple: design a chair.
Take a familiar object and give it your own interpretation. You might explore an unusual form, a new material, a different way of manufacturing, or simply create something with a distinctive visual character.
This is a deliberately simple brief. You don't need to spend days developing a fully resolved product. The aim is to see what you can come up with when you have the freedom to explore an idea and communicate it quickly.
WHAT COULD YOU EXPLORE?
Think about what makes your chair interesting. Consider its form and what gives the chair its identity. Think about the materials it could be made from and how it might be manufactured. Consider how someone would interact with it and what makes it comfortable or functional. Most importantly, think about what gives your chair its own character.
You don't need to address all of these ideas. They are simply prompts to help you develop your concept.
YOUR SUBMISSION
Submit one A3 page showing your chair concept.
Your page can include hand sketches, digital sketches, AI-generated concepts, form studies, technical drawings, material exploration, annotations or rendered images. You can combine different approaches however you like.
There is no requirement for a polished final render or a fully engineered product. We're interested in the idea and how you communicate it.
HOW LONG SHOULD IT TAKE?
There is no time limit and you can spend as long as you like developing your submission.
However, the brief is designed to be approachable and achievable in around 30 minutes, making it an easy way to take part without committing days to a competition.
So grab a piece of paper, open your favourite design software, or start generating some ideas with AI — and see what you can come up with.
One brief. One A3 page. Your interpretation.
Good luck!
